During the French Revolution (1789 to 1795) fashion changed for both men and women. It was no longer safe for men to be seen in powdered wigs, luxurious fabrics and carrying ornate dress swords. This would brand you as a royal sympathizer. For men the biggest change was the substitution of your breeches or culottes for wide floppy pants, favored by the French working class and the English sailors of the time. These revolutionaries, called "sans-culottes" with their red caps adorned with the blue, red and white cockades, the symbol of liberty and their trousers became the costume of the patriot. It also created a new trade for suspenders and caused stockings to shorten into socks.
